The Magnificent Lymph System

By Patricia Starr, LMT. R.A.

The Lymphatic System is probably one of the most important systems in the body. It is twice the size of the blood system, and yet hardly anyone talks about it? Does your doctor ever refer to it? A nurse?

The endocrine glands are the bosses of the body, they govern all. If the channels are not cleaned up, where do the toxins go? As a Certified Lymphatic Therapist, I see a consistent level of congestion either caused by surgeries, diet, or just overall stress.

The lymphatic system is uniquely susceptible to stress, and chronic surges of cortisol, the stress hormone, which can cause lymphoid tissue to atrophy (not work). Overtime, this can suppress the immune system and reduce the circulation of antibodies (needed to fight off infections). It is the primary

delivery system for energizing every cell after each meal. it is also the major detoxification channel for fats and proteins that have been incompletely digested upstream in the stomach and small intestine.

Two Apoptogenic Herbs for Lymph-Stress reduction:

Turmeric: supports production of new brain cells during stress, naturally lower cortisol levels, increases antioxidant stress-fighting activity and boost lymphatic circulation.

Tulsi Holy Basil: neuroprotective, immune supportive, free radical-scavenging, and balancing for the stress hormone cortisol.

Patricia Starr, LMT. R.A. is certified in lymphatic drainage, adept with working with herbs and essential oils, and trains in meditation and rebalancing the energy vortexes in the body for proper energetic flow.

Breathwork for Mind-Body Well- being

By Brandi Bowen

Breathwork involves intentionally controlling the way you breathe. Breathwork is a holistic, mind-body approach to mental health and well-being. It can be done simply and on your own, or it can be structured and part of a formal program. Its purpose is to directly influence your body’s inner workings to reduce stress, anxiety, and other challenges, increase calm, and encourage well-being.

How Breathing Affects the Brain & Body

The human brain constitutes two percent of our total body weight yet consumes about 20 percent of the oxygen we take in when we breathe. It needs a consistent and plentiful oxygen supply to operate smoothly for our physical and mental health. The brain interprets a low oxygen supply—the result of shallow, rapid breathing—as a threat or danger, and it activates the sympathetic nervous system (SNS).

The fight-or-flight reaction causes a chain of events that leads to:

  • Increased heart rate and blood pressure
  • Shift of blood flow away from the core organs and into the extremities
  • Increased production of stress hormones such as cortisol, adrenaline, and norepinephrine
  • Decreased production of relaxation, feel-good hormones like serotonin, oxytocin, and prolactin
  • Decreased oxygen supply to the brain (thus perpetuating the fight-or-flight reaction in a vicious cycle)

Resolving Brain Injuries

By Ernesto J. Fernandez, DOM, AP, LMHC

Non-Invasive Transcranial Brain Magnetic Therapy (NITBMT) is a Functional Neurology tool recently developed in Europe. Currently, there are less than 200 practitioners using this method worldwide. NITBMT is the specific use of a strong magnet to identify specific areas of the brain that have poor resilience such as poor blood circulation, poor oxygenation, and/or poor energy production/energy flow contributing to neurological problems. It was originally created for brain injury rehabilitation and is based on bone-brain relationship principles.

NITBMT is used to treat people with observable neurological impairments like brain injuries, strokes, poor memory, balance issues, Depression, and Chronic Pain. It is also very effective for people who don’t have major symptoms and who want to optimize and increase the resilience of their brain for greater adaptability to stress, mental clarity, objective decision-making, sensory function, motor balance, and coordination, and sports performance.

Mindful Eating

By Patricia Starr, LMT. R.A.

Digestion begins with the first scent of food. Scent travels thru the nostrils, olfactory system to the limbic – emotional center of the brain. This releases a cascade of digestive enzymes in your mouth, causing saliva. Your saliva is full of digestive enzymes the body releases geared to exactly what is needed to digest that food you are taking in. This saliva is called the “nutritive fluid”, mixed with enzymes and lymph fluid.

Most people simply gobble the food down without any awareness. Mindful eating allows the conscious awareness of all our senses, to connect to the intelligence of the food we are eating. This only happens when we eat with our senses wide open and remain aware of every bite we take. It is said “Eat you liquids, and drink you food”. Now that may seem strange, but if we are going to allow the enzymes to mix with what we are taking in, so that digestion can be properly executed, this is the procedure that we must perform. Yes, this means you will eat less, digest better, and – you heard it… lose Weight!!

Digestion starts in the mouth.. not in the stomach.. When we rush through our meals mindlessly, we also rush the digestive process and indigestion results. Eating under stress, sends threatening messages through our nervous system, putting our digestive system on hold. When we calm down, eat sitting down, chew our food mindfully, we optimally support our digestive system.
